Plaza George Orwell, or ¨Plaza Trippy¨ as it´s known by locals for it’s seedy past, is a hidden gem among the ridiculously priced establishments of this tourist heavy Gothic area.
Gone are the days where drug dealers loitered, from which it´s nickname derived. These days head here for delicious vegetarian or vegan, greek or some contemporary Spanish food and sit in the sun on the terrace.

Oviso
For me, the crown in Orwell’s crown is Oviso a humble little café which always has a dedicated crowd sitting out the front. The exposed brick walls are painted with murals depicting something between the inside of an Egyptian pyramid cross with a carnival trailer. I wasn´t surprised to hear that it´s owned by the same gang as one of my other favorites for a quick bite- La Castanya.
The menu of the day (menu del dia, 3 courses- entrée, main and desert) always looks amazing and costs as little as 6€!
Mon-Thu, Sun 10 am – 2:30 am
Fri-Sat 10 am – 3 am
Carrer d’Arai, 5

Goppal Vegan
The Goppal Vegan Deli Shop has a menu of the day for 6.90€ and a very impressive range of vegeburger patties that you can cook at home or have made into a burger instore.
You can also buy vegan cheese, tofu dishes, vegan empanadas, potato tortilla, and vegan cakes.
Open Sun-Fri 10.00-23.00, Sat 1.00-24.00.
la Calle Escudellers, 42

Vegetalia
Vegetalia Restaurante also graces the plaza, offering a menu del dia for 9.90 and has a large selection of teas and cakes.
They pride themselves on say that they making healthy and organic products using high quality organic vegetables from their own garden.
11:00 – 23:30
c/ Escudellers 54

La Poma
In the plaza you can also find La Poma-a popular snack bar for Asian food and some distinctly non-Asian dishes such as lasagna but I wouldn´t recommend this place for anyone on a diet or trying to avoid MSG.

Becky Robinson
Hola! My name is Becky. I´m yet another Australian expat who fell for the beautiful mistress we like to call Barcelona and stayed far, far longer than once intended. I throw myself into the cities events, bars, clubs, shops etc, with reckless abandon to bring you these reviews. It´s all for you! ...Or is it just an excuse to party and spend lots of money without feeling guilty?... Either way, read up on some of my favorite ways to see this exciting and eclectic city. Happy travels and welcome to BCN!
